2007 News & Events

Mutt Strut Fun!

The Cochrane and Area Humane Society held their 6th Annual Mutt Strut on Saturday September 8th at Mitford Park in Cochrane.

The morning started out cool but by mid morning the sun was shining.

This year participants and visitors were treated to our first Doggie Fashion Show hosted by Todd Gallant of Global TV. There were a number of well costumed four legged creatures, but the winning team involved a dog and owner costume!

We would like to thank all the participants, volunteers and sponsors!

We extend an extra thank-you to Cochrane Veterinary Care Clinic the Top Dog sponsor, Todd Gallant, and Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours for sponsoring the First Prize sled dog trip.

Golf Tournament Update

The 4th annual petsDOmatter Charity Golf Tournament, held August 9, was once again a huge success. The annual tournament is held in support of the new Cochrane & Area Humane Society shelter facility.

The tournament was held at the beautiful Links of Glen Eagles in Cochrane and was enjoyed by all in attendance; entertained by good friends, food, exciting prizes, and of course a spirited round of golf. The event raised approximately $35,000 to help the animals.

Once again, Cochrane Dodge generously donated a vehicle for the closest to the hole "putt-off". A Chevy Lumina was won by Dwight Ryder, an annual participant.

A big thanks goes out to our lead sponsors: Western Veterinary Specialist Centre, Animal Care Emergency of Calgary and The Cochrane Eagle. Many thanks to all of the bighearted sponsors, golfers, and prize donors for supporting this fabulous event. Thank you to our hardworking volunteers who battled the cold weather and helped make this a memorable day. Thank you to Jack Tennant for being a key organizer and the emcee of this event!

We were thrilled to welcome Banff-Cochrane MLA Janis Tarchuk to the tournament this year. Returning for another year of golf, was entertainer Tom Jackson and his wife Alison. We truly appreciate their continued support of the Cochrane & Area Humane Society.

2007 Mother's Day Tea

Elegant hats were the order of the day at the annual Mother’s Day Tea held Saturday, May 12th. And what a gorgeous day it was! This sell-out event has been a popular fundraiser for 9 years and this year raised over $3000. The tasty sandwiches, delightful cookies and exquisite fancy cakes, all prepared by our very own Elizabeth Young, were savoured by approximately 120 guests. Elizabeth’s husband Chris ensured that the tea, supplied by Cochrane’s “Tea…and other things”, was in constant supply. Loads of lovely door prizes, and the raffle of an at-home tea donated by Elizabeth, topped off a delightful afternoon.

Strings for Strays III

Strings for Strays III was held at the St. Andrews United Church on May 6, 2007. The benefit concert, performed by members of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and friends raised $3316 towards the petsDOmatter Capital Campaign. Thank you all for the wonderful performance and your continued support for the Cochrane Humane Society. Your donation of a portion of cd sales was also very much appreciated: Megan Bain (viola), Lauren Eselson (flute), Phil Hansen (cello), Michael Hope(baritone), Lucie Jones (flute), Julie Jacques (piano), Gwen Klassen (flute), Tom Megee (cello), Tisha Murvihill (harp), Martin Russell (guitar), Donovan Seidle (violin), Jim Scott (trombone), Heather Wootton (French horn).

Many thanks to St. Andrews United Church for the use of the church, as always the acoustics were great. Thank you to Tim Horton’s, McDonald’s, IGA and Safeway for the coffee, juice and cookies enjoyed by all.

A big thank you to Tirion and Tanith Jones and Genevra Magliocco who made and sold wine charms, raising $101 to benefit the animals at the shelter.

A very special thank you to Gwen Klassen, for organizing this event for the third year! All proceeds to the Cochrane Humane Society petsDOmatter Capital Campaign.

2007 Spring Garage Sale

We would like to thank all of you who pitched in to pull off our most successful garage sale to date. You can all pat yourselves on the back for raising $13,500 for the animals at this year’s sale – all your hard work paid off! Thanks to the Eagle and Cochrane Ford for their kind sponsorship every penny of it will go directly to the animals!

I would like to send a special thanks to Kate Myhr as she was the driving force and key organizer for this event. It is not easy to organize and manage that many volunteers and that much stuff, Kate did a fabulous job and I think judging by all of your comments and positive feedback that you would agree.

Kate has also asked me to pass on her sincerest appreciation to each of you for your hard work and dedication to another great event. Thank you!

Grade 6.4 Springbank Middle School

Mrs. Magee’s grade 6 class in Springbank was the chosen grade by Neetu Sidhu, a fourth year business student at the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary. Neetu’s course required her to guide a team of students through the project of starting a small business.

The students decided to do a pet-oriented business and so the decision to do the pet stockings for Christmas was made and to donate the proceeds to The Cochrane Humane Society. The business was called Christmas Critters. Neetu acted as the CEO of the business and VPs of sales, human resources, finance and marketing were chosen from among the students. Initially, the goal was to sell 100 stockings and Neetu thought this was quite an ambitious goal.

The final tally was that the students sold a grand total of 223 stockings and $1151 was donated to the Cochrane Humane Society!

Congratulations to both Neetu Sidhu and to the Grade 6.4 class of Springbank Midlle School and a heartfelt thanks from all at the Cochrane Humane Society.
